Geraniums and 2010 Name Changes

It is hard to believe that it is almost that time of year again! Spring brings warmer weather, bursts of vivid colors and textures and a greenhouse full of so many plants I can’t even begin to name them. Not to mention that it is time to reclaim your outdoor spaces from the clutches of winter and get that garden growing! Of course nothing says that the onset of spring is near better than a flush of fresh blooming zonal and ivy geraniums.

You should be aware that this year’s geraniums are going to undergo name changes, both zonal and ivy geraniums alike. For example, ‘Noblesse’ will be renamed ‘Classic Dark Salmon’ and ‘Bravo’ will now be known as ‘Tango Pink Splash.’ These name changes were made mostly to simplify some of the confusion caused by the old names and to help give the 124 geranium cultivars more of a categorized style of organization. The geraniums will now be broken down into subcategories to eliminate this problem.

Below is a list of the zonal and ivy geraniums that we carry at Fairview. You will see both the “old” name and the “new” name. We hope that with this new name change will come less confusion and a greater ability for our customers to make the right choice in choosing the perfect geranium. Geraniums are an all-time classic and a staple in American horticulture. No outdoor space would be complete without geraniums ushering in the new growing season!
