Grow a Bean Teepee

Making a bean teepee creates a great shady hideaway for little ones as well as some fresh veggies for your dinner table. You will want to start this project around the time you plant your tomatoes. This project is very easy and is sure to be great fun for kids of all ages. Let’s get started!

Materials Needed

- 1 Packet of Pole Bean Seeds
- 3-6 6’ Long Bamboo Stakes
- A Planting Area About 6’ Square
- Straw
- Waterproof String
- Plant Ties

Putting It All Together

First, dig the soil (and amend, as needed) where your teepee will be placed. Next, arrange your stakes in a circle, securely placing them in the ground ten inches from the edge of your garden bed. It is important to leave a two foot wide space for the opening of the teepee so little ones can enter and exit! Gather the tops of the bamboo stakes and securely tie them together with your string. Soak your bean seeds overnight; doing so will help ensure faster sprouting. Next, plant your seeds per the directions on the packet in a circle pattern around the base of the teepee; water thoroughly. Finally, mulch your seeds with a two inch layer of straw. Once your bean vines begin to grow, carefully tie the stems to the teepee stakes. In approximately six to eight weeks, your teepee will be covered with pole bean vines!
