How To: Make a Scarecrow

Colder weather brings our focus indoors and it is a good time to plan ahead for the spring months to come. Why not help your kids get a jump start on gardening by making a scarecrow for their garden!? This fun project is really simple and really doesn’t require too many items you don’t already have around your house. Let’s get started!

Materials Needed

- Adult Clothing: Plaid Shirt, Vest, Jeans, Gloves, Boots or Socks, Belt
- Straw or Leaves
- One or Two 2x4
- Saw
- Nails
- Hammer
- Pillowcase
- String or Rope
- Waterproof Markers or Buttons
- Straw Hat
- Safety Pins

Directions

First you need to build your frame. Adults, take the 2x4’s and cut them so that one stake is tall enough for the height of the clothing you have chosen with an extra 1-1/2 feet in length so you can push it into the ground once finished. Cut the other stake the width of the shirt with the arms stretched out. Nail the boards in a cross-like form. Next, stuff your pillowcase with either leaves or straw to form the shape of the head. Tie off the rounded head with a string or rope, leaving the excess material to dangle. Take the excess material and pull it over the vertical stake and secure it safely with your string or rope. Facial features can be added with waterproof markers or by sewing buttons. Fasten a straw hat atop the head with safety pins.

Now you need to put the “body” of your scarecrow together. Place your shirt on the stakes, with the “arms” through the sleeves and the “body” in the body of the shirt. Fasten the buttons and stuff the shirt with leaves or straw, stuffing firmly. Once stuffed, tie the shirt at the waist of your scarecrow to ensure the stuffing remains intact. Next, put a belt through the loops on your jeans to attach the jeans to the stake and shirt. Safety pins may be used to keep jeans in place. Prop the legs into boots or stuffed sox so your scarecrow has feet! Finally, pin stuffed gloves to the end of the shirt arms for hands! Viola!

Have Fun!
