The Garden Chrysanthemum \u2013 a must have for the fall garden or seasonal doorstep.\u00a0 Available in a huge variety of colors and varieties, \u00a0Mum flowers can vary from double petals, semi-double and fringed.<\/p>\n
Annual, Perennial, What\u2019s the deal?<\/h2>\n
Fairview\u2019s fall Garden Mum selections are chosen for their hardiness in our planting zone (Zone 7b).\u00a0 \u00a0They are seasonally grown in our greenhouses for a flower bud set that will produce September and October blossoms.\u00a0 This means that they put most of their energy into producing vibrant fall blooms rather than focusing on established root growth.\u00a0 For this reason, Garden Mums are generally sold as cold-hardy seasonal annuals planted for decorative fall color.<\/p>\n
This focus on flowers does not mean, however, that some varieties will not re-grow next spring.\u00a0 Many varieties will overwinter when planted in the ground using proper planting procedures and receiving appropriate\u00a0fall plant care.\u00a0 Mums are a very low maintenance plant and are fairly drought tolerant once established.\u00a0 Mums planted in containers will act more as an annual rather than a perennial.<\/p>\n
Mum Care for Fall<\/h2>\n

Full to partial sun.\u00a0 At least 6 hours of direct sunlight is ideal.<\/li>\n
Plant about 2 feet apart in bedding areas.<\/li>\n
Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer (Osmocote) after planting and water in thoroughly.<\/li>\n
Water mums from the soil to prevent stem rot.<\/li>\n
Once the ground freezes and plant becomes dormant, mulch well to prevent the roots from freezing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Remove dead foliage & extra mulch by mid-March<\/li>\n
Pinching back occasionally encourages compact, bushy growth and promotes blooms for fall.<\/li>\n
